BAE System to build next Astute-class submarine for Royal Navy

FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom. UK?s Ministry of Defence selected BAE Systems to deliver the next Astute-class submarine to the Royal navy in a contract valued an estimated $1.78 billion (?1.4 billion).
Work for the sixth of seven nuclear-powered attack submarines will be performed at the company’s site at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon stated, "This latest investment means we are well on our way to completing our fleet of Astute submarines. These are the most advanced submarines ever operated by the Royal Navy and are already providing unprecedented levels of stealth and attack capability across the world. Backed by a rising defence budget and a £178 billion [$227.5 billion] equipment plan, Barrow will remain the hub of our submarine build programmes providing high skilled jobs for years to come.”
The first three Astute class submarines HMS Astute, HMS Ambush, and HMS Artful are currently in service with the Royal navy with a further four in various stages of construction at the Barrow site.
BAE Systems is the prime contractor responsible for the design, build, test, and commissioning of the seven Astute class nuclear-powered attack submarines.
