ADELPHI, Md. Studies being conducted by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory are using findings on electromagnetism and radio frequency to ensure U.S. defense forces obtain spectrum dominance on the battlefield.
Satellite and radar technology is designed to facilitate the Army's ability to sense at long ranges, thus the study of electromagnetic waves could influence the landscape of future battlefields, where the electromagnetic spectrum will be contested.
While the U.S. Department of Defense manages research programs that study electromagnetic wavelengths of all frequencies, Army officials claim that this round of research will focus on the low frequency portion of the spectrum known as the radio frequencies (RF) to improve essential RF structures such as antennas, transmitters, recievers, and other wireless technology.
ARL officials also claim that quantum-based technologies, photonics, and advancements in metamaterials are currently being pursued at ARL with the intent to enable the development of more sophisticated electromagnetic sensors that could decide the outcome of conflicts against competing adversaries.
