Information warfare capabilities modernized through NAVWAR engineering facility upgrade

SAN DIEGO, Calif. Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR) upgraded its Network Integration Engineering Facility (NIEF) to better support the design and delivery of advanced information warfare capabilities to the fleet.
The NIEF, developed and managed by Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC Pacific), and located at NAVWAR headquarters in San Diego, specializes in the rapid design and integration of commercial and government off-the-shelf products for military applications. It also provides environmental qualification testing services for those products, which applies to both the development of new systems and upgrades to existing systems.
Upgrades to the facility involved the conversion of an open, unsecured production area to an environmentally controlled secure facility. The new facility supports application pre-loading and provides a classified space where integrated teams can work together to deliver high-quality information warfare capabilities.
Many U.S. Navy systems, such as the Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES), require a secret-level facility to enable loading certificates, software applications, and secret compartmental information internet protocol, all of which is performed at the NIEF would significantly reduce the install time on the ship. Other benefits include improved delivery of integrated capability and reduced shipboard installation timeline and impact on Sailors.
