No room for compromise in supply chain security: New DoD initiative establishes benchmark for strategic ICT sourcing - Story

September 03, 2018
In response to the growing nexus between physical risk (counterfeits) and cyber risk (infiltration of systems and exfiltration of data) the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has introduced a new policy adding security as a fundamental pillar of federal acquisition and supply chain risk management. Component manufacturers in the military and aerospace arenas - as well as those in all high-tech verticals - can adopt current and emerging best-practice approaches to mitigate both cybersecurity threats and counterfeit component exposures.

Counterfeit components: The stakes are rising - Story

July 22, 2016
One of the greatest risks to the welfare of not only U.S. service members, but all citizens around the world, is the proliferation of counterfeit electronic components into the military and aerospace supply chain. With the growing adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies within practically every conceivable market segment, this risk is growing by orders of magnitude. Every person in the component supply chain should be doing their best to put an end to the counterfeit scourge before we find ourselves face to face with a systems failure or breach, driven either by greed or maliciousness, that could cause irreparable harm. All segments in the supply chain of things must take responsibility to eliminate this challenge.

Mitigating the risk of counterfeit electronics - Story

July 08, 2015
Counterfeit parts are a serious business. The top four most-counterfeited components alone affect $281.5 billion worth of semiconductor markets, and it's estimated that electronics-part counterfeiting costs U.S. semiconductor manufacturers around $7.5 billion per year. . The best way to mitigate this risk is to work within a trusted supply chain that depends on authorized manufacturers.

Counterfeit threat taking malicious turn? - Story

October 06, 2014
In June 2014, an American contractor from Massachusetts admitted to conspiring to traffic counterfeit military goods for his role in shipping counterfeit semiconductors from Hong Kong to a U.S. Navy submarine base in Connecticut. The chips - sold as new - were actually refurbished and remarked. Had this criminal scheme not been thwarted, the parts would have been installed in nuclear submarines. The catastrophic potential cannot be overstated.
