Contract aims to increase safety, health of aviation personnel

PASADENA, Calif. Engineering consulting firm Tetra Tech has won a $40 million, single-award contract from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) to develop a new information system for tracking and analyzing medical information associated with pilots, air-traffic controllers, and other aviation-related personnel.
Under the terms of the five-year Aerospace Medicine Safety Information System (AMSIS) contract, Tetra Tech will support the FAA in the system engineering and design, system architecture development, testing, data analytics, training, and deployment of the system.
The AAM exists to advance the field of study of aerospace medicine and medical-certification programs for pilots, air traffic controllers, and other safety-critical personnel. According to Tetra Tech information, AMSIS will be used as a platform to provide better data accessibility and enhanced ability to analyze medical information to identify safety trends. When completed, AMSIS will replace existing legacy systems and functions and will also provide new capabilities to support such AAM core safety initiatives as Airmen Medical Certification, ATCS Medical Clearance, Industry Drug and Alcohol Testing Program (Drug Abatement), Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) Program, Internal Substance Abuse Program, and Aerospace Medical Research.
