Northrop Grumman to modernize U.S. Air Force GPS navigation systems

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. Northrop Grumman Corporation has garnered a contract from the U.S. Air Force to perform tasks relating to technology maturation and risk reduction in support of next-generation navigation systems.
Under the terms of the $49 million contract from the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Northrop Grumman is set to provide the preliminary hardware and software architecture design for the Embedded Global Positioning System (GPS)/Inertial Navigation System (INS)-Modernization, or EGI-M, technology. EGI-M will be built using modular open systems architecture to enable the rapid insertion of new capabilities and enhance adaptability. Moreover, EGI-M will incorporate M-Code-capable GPS receivers, which will help to ensure the secure transmission of accurate military GPS signals.
The upgraded GPS is expected to be available for platform integration beginning in 2019.
