Autonomous landing system for UH-60 Black Hawks to use thermal management technology from Parker Aerospace

LIBERTY LAKE, WASH. Officials at Sierra Nevada Corp. are using thermal management solutions from Parker Aerospace for the for its Helicopter Autonomous Landing System (HALS) program integration on UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
Sierra Nevada Corp. won a contract to improve degraded visual environments (DVE) operational needs covered in a statement from by the Army Aviation Networks Mission Planning Program Directorate. HALS combines real-time 3D imagery with satellite imagery, digital terrain map, and DVE specific guidance symbology to create a complete DVE system for takeoff, approach, and landing operations in brownouts, fog, and other DVEs. Initial HALS deployments will support Operation Enduring Freedom.
Parker’s thermal management systems cool critical HALS electronics, says Bob Lombard, program manager for HALS at Sierra Nevada Corp. The HALS systems for the Army will be used in extremely harsh environments with high levels of heat, vibration, dust, and sand, he adds. “We have been very happy with Parker’s thermal management" technology and support during the HALS development and flight-testing phases, Lombard says.
The TMS team from Parker focuses on thermal management systems that include cold plates, liquid-cooled environmentally sealed enclosures, and heat rejection devices for harsh environments in defense, aerospace, and industrial applications. The group also teams with other Parker divisions to provide controllers, motors, pumps, quick disconnects, valves, and other fluid distribution products.
