Unmanned maritime systems research gets $19.4 million boost from U.S. Office of Naval Research

GROTON, Conn. Autonomous-systems company ThayerMahan has won a four-year, $19.4 million contract from the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) as part of ONR's continuing effort to promote the development and deployment of unmanned maritime systems in support of U.S. Navy missions.
According to ThayerMahan information, the contract will fund development of innovative autonomous systems and enhancement of the company's proprietary acoustic- and electronic-search systems with an eye to support of Navy and Marine Corps missions.
The program, dubbed "Development, Testing, and Application of Unmanned Maritime Systems to Produce Innovative Maritime Autonomous Cross-Domain Capabilities," is designed to promote and advance the use of advanced technologies in support of cross-domain awareness initiatives within the Navy and Marine Corps, say ThayerMahan executives.
