Hydrogen fuel cell for UAVs from Intelligent Energy to debut at AUVSI Xponential

LOUGHBOROUGH, U.K./CUPERTINO, Calif. Fuel-cell engineering company Intelligent Energy is set to launch a new 2.4 kilowatt (kW) fuel-cell drone module for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at the AUVSI Xponential 2019 show held at the end of April 2019.
Intelligent Energy intends to offer the 2.4 kW UAV fuel-cell power module (FCPM) to select customers for delivery in October 2019; Lee Juby, chief sales officer at Intelligent Energy, stated that modules will then be widely available to customers starting in early 2020.
Juby added that the latest product can achieve much longer flight times: "For example, on a DJI M600 frame with an 11-liter, 350-Bar hydrogen cylinder, a retrospectively fitted 2.4kW FCPM could achieve a flight time of over two hours compared to just 25 minutes with its battery power pack.” In addition, two 2.4 kW modules can be linked in parallel to provide up to 4.8 kW of power without needing additional hardware. The module delivers constant power to the UAV and is hybridized with a small battery to handle peak loads.
The module is able to fit onto a variety of off-the-shelf frames or customers can additionally optimize efficiency and flight time on a customized frame.
