DEVESLU, Romania. U.S. Navy officials certified the first Aegis Ashore site at Deveslu Air Force Base in Romania for operational use; it is now monitoring southern Europe for ballistic missile threats.

The activation of the system fulfills phase II of the European Phased Adaptive Approach, a plan to protect deployed U.S. forces and European allies from ballistic missile threats. Lockheed Martin is currently in the production process for a second Aegis Ashore site including SPY arrays in Europe, which will be located in Poland.

Lockheed Martin officials say, testing and installation contracts have not been awarded yet, but U.S. Missile Defense Agency officials are expected to award contracts this spring.
