Tomahawk missile's weapons system gets hardware and software upgrade

PHILADELPHIA. Engineers at Lockheed Martin are upgrading the Tomahawk Land Attack missile?s weapon-control system software and hardware. The Tactical Tomahawk Weapon Control System, or TTWCS), TTWCS gives firing units the ability to control, prepare, and launch Tomahawk missiles and is one of the three main components that make up the Tomahawk Weapons System.
This TTWCS hardware and software modification enables enhancements for specific mission and launch timelines. The upgrade team also is integrating new processors to reduce run-times for several applications from minutes to seconds. TTWCS also provides a transition to the next upgrade, which is scheduled for 2015. As part of a long-term incremental approach, the current TTWCS upgrade will be integrated on surface platforms only, including Ticonderoga Class Cruisers (CG) and Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers (DDG).
Lockheed Martin engineers are working with experts from U.S. Navy Labs on the upgrade.
