U.S. Navy orders multimode radars for Coast Guard patrol cutters

SYRACUSE, N.Y. Saab Defense and Security has obtained a contract from the U.S. Navy to provide its Sea Giraffe Agile Multi Beam (AMB), Multi-Mode Radar (MMR) for deployment with the U.S. Coast Guard. The value of the initial order -- covering the procurement of two systems -- amounts to $16.8 million but with options for additional radars the contract may be worth as much as $118.5 million.
Under the terms of the contract, Saab’s Sea Giraffe MMR -- a 3-D, electronically scanned phased-array radar -- will be installed on the U.S. Coast Guard’s (USCG's) newest class of ship, the Offshore Patrol Cutter. The MMR provides high radiated power, selectable waveforms, and modern signal processing to continue to perform at a high level of confidence across various marine environments.
"The MMR radar provides simultaneous sea-to-sky radar coverage against the most challenging tracks to ensure total situational awareness,” stated Erik Smith, president and CEO of Saab Defense and Security USA.
