PARIS. Raytheon has been awarded a $200 million multi-year bulk buy contract to provide Phalanx Close-in Weapon Systems (CIWS) upgrade kits, hardware, and support equipment to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
The Phalanx CIWS is a computer-controlled, rapid-fire radar and 20 mm gun system that is capable of acquiring, tracking, and destroying enemy threats. The CIWS is currently integrated on Japan’s Ship Self-Defense Program, and almost 900 systems have been built and deployed to navies around the globe.
"Phalanx provides the critical inner-layer of protection to sailors around the globe against threats that are continually evolving," said Rick Nelson, VP of Raytheon Missile Systems' Naval and Area Mission Defense product line. "Thanks to its array of sensors, Phalanx brings a proven solution against threats launched from land, sea or air."
