SINGAPORE. Lockheed Martin and U.S. Air Force officials showcased a new F-16 variant at the Singapore Airshow ? the F-16V, which has an upgraded mission computer and open architecture design, a new active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, and other cockpit enhancements.
The F-16V configuration is an option for new production jets and upgrade elements are available for retrofit to most earlier-model F-16s. The “V” designation is for Viper, which fighter pilots have called the F-16 from its beginnings.
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics officials say the F-16V provide users with better interoperability with 5th generation fighters such as the F-35 Joint Stroke Fighter (JSF) and F-22 Raptor.
