General Dynamics, Army agree to Abrams tank modernization project

LIMA, Ohio. General Dynamics Land Systems recently received two large contract awards from the U.S. Army for upgrades to the M1A2 Abrams main battle tank brigade.
The modernization program is aimed at increasing the tanks' network compatibility, increasing power generation and distribution, and enhancing the survivability and lethality of the tanks.
The first contract is for creation of the System Enhancement Package Version 4 (SEPv4), which which includes the Commander's Primary Sight (formerly known as the Commander's Independent Thermal Viewer), an improved Gunner's Primary Sight, and sensor enhancements to sensors. Under this agreement -- which has an initial value of $311 million -- General Dynamics Land Systems will deliver seven prototype M1A2 SEPv4 tanks to the Army.
Under the terms of the second award -- a $270 million contract from the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Command to produce 45 Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 tanks -- General Dynamics will upgrade the tanks' communications, reliability, sustainment, fuel efficiency, and armor. These enhanced tanks are expected to roll off the production line in late 2017.
