Airborne synthetic aperture radar from Lockheed Martin now available to nations in Europe and Asia

FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom. Lockheed Martin?s airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is now available internationally. The AN/APY-12 airborne reconnaissance radar produces high resolution, photo-like imagery, in darkness or inclement weather or darkness. Company officials made the announcement this week at the Farnborough Air Show in the United Kingdom.
The dual mode, X-band SAR, which has moving target indication capability, is now cleared for export to certain countries, such as Italy, Taiwan, Korea, and Sweden.
The AN/APY-12, which was designed for surveillance and reconnaissance missions, is capable of transmitting airborne processed images and moving target detections to ground- stations in real-time through secure data links. The system has a new mode that delivers GMTI detections with enhanced sensitivity and improved geo-location accuracy. The radar also integrates a wide area moving target indicator (WAMTI) mode that scans thousands of square-kilometers, detects ground movement, and then overlays that moving target information onto a map in less than a minute.
The radar is offered within Dragon Stare, the Lockheed Martin Dragon family of ISR systems. Dragon Stare provides users the option to obtain sensors and systems tailored for the specific aircraft platform they choose – unmanned or manned, podded or integrated within the mission system.
