Advanced sensing technology in development with BAE Systems partnership

UNITED KINGDOM. BAE Systems and the University of Birmingham have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to form an Advanced Sensing Technologies Consortium, drawing on leading experts from industry, academia, and government. This forms part of the Government-funded National Quantum Technologies program to drive four U.K.-based hubs which includes a Sensors and Timing hub led by the University of Birmingham.
The consortium will aim to accelerate the development and application of advanced sensing technology, as well as develop technologies that will benefit U.K. industry. These could include novel navigation systems that do not rely on GPS designed primarily for platforms operating in GPS-denied environments and cognitive workload measurement that would use sensing technologies to measure mental workload.
Other capabilities could include enhanced situational awareness sensors for autonomous vehicles and novel sensors designed with the ability to detect buried infrastructure.
The new agreement aims to build on BAE Systems’ existing strategic partnership with the University of Birmingham, the U.K. Quantum Technology Hubs, and suppliers of sensor systems in an effort to drive innovative technologies into data-rich environments.
