ECHING, Germany. Kontron officials released their latest generation of 3U OpenVPX single-board computers (SBC) that use interface technology that is based on the 3rd generation Intel Core i7 processors.
The SBCs have native support for 10 Gigabit Ethernet as well as PCI Express 3.0 for the bandwidth demands of network-centric aerospace, military, aerospace, and transportation applications. The new boards – VX3042 and VX3044 – provide Ethernet connectivity via 10GBASE-KR, 1000BASE-T, and 1000BASE-BX, eight lane PCI Express via gen 3.0 and x1 PCI Express gen 2.0, 1x USB 3.0 and 4x USB 2.0. Storage media may be connected via 2x SATA 3 and 2x SATA 2, each with RAID 0/1/5/10 support. On-board soldered SATA-Flash also is available as an option for hosting operating system and application code. Three DisplayPort interfaces enable increased graphics power out of the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 to as many as three independent monitors.
The VX3042 is targeted for any rugged and console server application and is based on the 2.2 GHz dual-core Intel Core i7-3517UE processor with configurable TDP between 14 and 25 Watts. It offers as many as 16 GB soldered ECC DDR3 SDRAM and one XMC site to enable application specific customization by filling the XMC slot with additional specialized XMCs such as I/O, field bus, and storage modules.
The VX3044 with its Intel Core i7-3612QE quad-core processor running at 2.1 GHZ can boost the performance levels of high performance embedded computing (HPEC) applications, such as sonar, radar, and other military applications. It also has as much as 16 MB soldered ECC DDR3 SDRAM.
By using the latest Intel Core i7 processors the boards enable Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) constrained appliances to have as much as 20 percent more processing performance and 50 percent more graphics performance than SBCs that use the 2nd generation Intel Core processors, Kontron officials say.
The Kontron 3U OpenVPX SBCs can be ordered as a stand-alone system or as a part of Kontron’s new multi-mission rugged computer system ApexVX. The new Kontron SNCs are available now and support Linux, Windows Embedded Standard 7, and VxWorks. For more information, visit www.kontron.com.
