Veteran's Day and the Flower of Remembrance

Thank you to those that serve, past and present. The flower of remembrance – a red poppy – has become a symbol to remember veterans.
The origins of the flower stem from the poem “In Flanders Fields” by Col. John McCrae, a surgeon in Canada’s First Brigade Artillery. After reading the poem, Anna E. Guerin and Moina Michael started a fundraiser selling artificial poppies. They wanted to help those affected by the war, including orphans, and the poppy flower became well known in the 1920s.

A special thanks to those moms and dads that leave home for months at a time on deployment - it’s not easy coming home to kids that have grown up away from you. I wouldn’t take a day back from my time in the Navy, but I always admired and still do the new and experienced parents that leave for extended periods of time.
