Human/AI teaming collaboration coming from ARL, IEEE Brain collaboration

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. Officials at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Brain Initiative (IEEE brain) in conjunction with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) are engaging with the scientific community with a newly developed web presence in an effort to strategize scientific and engineering approaches for future effective human-artificial intelligence (AI) teaming.
IEE Brain aims to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration and coordination to advance research, standardization and development of technologies in neuroscience to help improve the human condition.
"Trends towards increasingly effective intelligent technologies, novel approaches to integrate humans and intelligent technologies, and increased resolution to understand and predict human behavior underlie projections of a future where human and intelligent agents join together to enable team functionality far surpassing today's capabilities," says Dr. Arwen Decostanza, ARL researcher.
Even as these trends point to a future vision, accelerating the technology remains an open question, Researchers point out.
"ARL is leveraging IEEE Brain's inaugural on-line brainstorming forum to engage the community on the scientific, engineering and innovation challenges underlying technology development," Decostanza says.
To push the agenda, Decostanza and colleagues wrote a position paper on the scientific challenges underlying the technologies that are tailored to individual team members or sub-groups to enhance the overall outcomes of a human-agent team.
"We submitted the paper to IEEE Brain and they agreed to publish it on their on-line brainstorming forum," she said. "IEEE Brain, with the ARL authors, have integrated several mechanisms to engage in this brainstorming activity. To gather quick opinions from the community, polling questions are embedded within the position paper itself."
Open dialogue among the broad academic, industry and government communities is a critical component of identifying the necessary research and development required to achieve a transformational level of technology, says Dr. Kaleb McDowell, chief scientist for ARL's Human Research and Engineering Directorate.
"We are happy to create a forum for the scientific community to provide feedback on ARL's position paper on the future of human-AI teaming," says Dr. Paul Sajda, a professor at Columbia University and co-Chair of IEEE Brain, who was instrumental helping the team establish the forum. "The IEEE Brain Initiative is dedicated to working with academia, industry and government to develop, discuss and debate technology roadmaps in a variety of areas pertaining to new interfaces between humans and machines."
