SUNNYVALE, Calif., The U.S. Navy accepted a third Lockheed Martin Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite after the completion of on-orbit testing. It is being relocated to its operational slot in preparation for operational acceptance.
The MUOS-3 satellite, launched earlier this year, is an addition to a network of orbiting satellites and relay ground stations that help provide secure communications for mobile military forces. MUOS terminal users can connect around the globe including simultaneous voice, video, and mission data on a high-speed Internet protocol-based system.
“This latest satellite will expand the MUOS network’s coverage over more than three-quarters of the globe, including significantly more coverage north and south than the current legacy voice-only system,” says Iris Bombelyn, Lockheed Martin’s vice president for narrowband communication. s
MUOS-1 and MUOS-2, already operational and providing voice communications, launched respectively in 2012 and 2013. MUOS-4 is expected to launch later this year.
