Harris Corporation has released a backpack version of its KnightHawk tactical cellular network solution, KnightLite, allowing connectivity and smart apps to warfighters at the tactical edge. The mobile cellular networking technology runs on the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), and works in conjunction with primary radio communications to provide high-bandwidth information exchange in areas with minimal-to-no communications infrastructure.
With the ability to run as a scalable network or autonomously for increased cellular coverage, KnightLite supports high-speed packet access in addition to high-speed data, video, SMS, and voice communications. This allows the use of COTS smartphones and tablets on a KnightLite edge network and, combined with dynamic allocation for efficient bandwidth utilization, affords a maximum in data resources to multiple mobile devices.
Weighing 8 pounds without the battery and measuring 7.4" W x 3.7" H x 8.8" D, KnightLite is designed for use as a man-pack radio, but can also be installed in-vehicle on a tactical radio mount. It is also compatible with existing tactical radio batteries and antennas.
Operation on the UMTS and compatibility with COTS smartphones and tablets renders cost-effective deployment of the KnightLite system.
