UK Royal Navy to install NAVICS integrated communications systems

MUNICH. Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) has received an order from BAE Systems to equip the British Royal Navy's future Type 26 Global Combat Ship (T26 GCS) with an integrated communications system; at the core of the system will be the R&S NAVICS, a new VoIP-based switching system with additional security measures built in.
The communications systems will connect the distributed onboard voice terminals, plus as all of the ships' other subsystems, for both internal and external communications via a uniform IP network. The NAVICS system's ruggedized, conventional IT technology will be combined with additional R&S security, which taken together means that the number of voice terminals can be reduced and state-of-the-art ATEX smartphones can be used employed within security-critical mobile environments.
R&S engineers say that the system, while technically complex, will be kept user-friendly by way of an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI). A common infrastructure will be set up for all services on board, named "shared network infrastructure" and "shared computing environment"; the open open architecture will facilitate connection of future technologies and reduce obsolescence concerns.
