Pixus Technologies releases ATCA shelf with 40GbE backplane for military applications

WATERLOO, Ontario. Engineers at Pixus Technologies released a new 6U AdvancedTCA (ATCA) SlotSaver Shelf, called the PXS0640, that adds two slots of payload card usage and features a 40GBASE-KR4 backplane for 40GbE performance.
The high density, fully redundant product is targeted at military, aerospace, telecommunications, high-end networking/computing applications.
The PXS0640 SlotSaver has shelf managers that also use dual redundant switch functionality. An AdvancedTCA horizontal shelf would typically have to dedicate two slots for redundant switch cards, thus providing only four payload slots. With the PXS0640, the combined switch/shelf manager functionality enables six payload slots for a 50 percent increase in the compute density.
The Pixus device has a push-pull cooling configuration and a flexible power configuration. All of the field replaceable units (FRUs) are hot-swappable, including the cooling units, washable filter, power entry modules (PEMs), shelf managers (ShMM), and AC power supplies. The shelf has AC and DC options – as many as 4x AC power supplies in an N+1 configuration and as much as 2x DC PEMs. The AC and DC power can also be running at the same time for swapping modules in the field. A 5U shelf with DC-only power is also available.
The 6-slot ATCA backplane has a dual-star configuration, with an option to add a full mesh, and an option to add a replicated mesh on the node slots. The shelf manager provides the integration of 40GbE and 1GbE layer three managed switches on the same module. With two combined shelf managers and switches in the system, there is full redundancy and failover for the shelf managers and switches.
