Coast Guard signs $94 million advance procurement contract for national-security cutter

WASHINGTON. The U.S. Coast Guard has awarded shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries a $94 million fixed-price contract to purchase long-lead materials for a tenth National Security Cutter (NSC).
The advance procurement funds will be used to buy major components for NSC 10, such as steel, the main propulsion systems, generators, electrical switchboards, and major castings; the Legend-class NSCs are 418 feet long with a 54-foot beam, displace 4,500 tons with a full load, travel at a top speed of 28 knots (32.2 miles per hour), can range over 12,000 miles, have an endurance level of 60 days, and carry a crew of 120.
According to materials from Huntington Ingalls Industries, the Legend-class NSC includes an aft launch and recovery area for two rigid hull inflatable boats and a flight deck to accommodate a range of manned and unmanned rotary-wing aircraft and is capable of handling such varied duties as maritime homeland security, law enforcement, marine safety, environmental protection, and national defense missions.
Huntington Ingalls Industries' Mississippi location will handle the construction of NSC 10.
