SAN DIEGO. Northrop Grumman Corp. won the next phase of the Navy?s Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) contract. CANES was created to modernize and consolidate and Navy shipboard network systems to enhance overall operational effectiveness as well as affordability fleetwide.

The production and limited deployment phase is worth about $37 million. CANES has a potential cumulative value of $368 million.

CANES consolidation should eliminate most legacy, standalone networks as well as provide a common computing environment infrastructure for many command, control, intelligence and logistics applications.

Under the contract modification Northrop Grumman engineers will deliver the initial CANES shipsets for installation. CANES is planned to deploy on a fleet destroyer during late fiscal year 2012.

CANES will leverage commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology and open architectures through Northrop Grumman’s Modular Open Systems Approach-Competitive process.
