ARLINGTON, Va. BAE Systems has acquired engineering company IAP Research of Dayton, Ohio, a longtime subcontractor on BAE Systems' development of an electromagnetic railgun. IAP develops and manufactures electromagnetic technologies and advanced composites.
The Office of Naval Research (ONR) first announced in 2012 that it had fired a projectile from an electromagnetic railgun (EMRG) in February 2012, using a prototype built by BAE Systems. According to the ONR, ships equipped with railguns would be able to fire projectiles at a range of 100 nautical miles with a firing rate of 10 rounds per minute.
