NORTHBROOK, Ill.. The tactical data link market is projected to grow from $4.76 billion in 2017 to $6.43 billion by 2022, at a combined annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.17 percent over that period, according to data in the report "Tactical Data Link Market -- Global Forecast to 2022," recently published by MarketsandMarkets.

The major factors driving that tactical data link market over the forecast period will be demand for improved interoperability among forces and increased geopolitical tensions and security threats, say analysts.

Broken out by platform type, the study found that the air-based (fixed-wing, rotary-wing, and unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV]) segment of the tactical data link market is estimated to grow at the highest growth rate during the forecast period. Airborne tactical data links can be used to provide high-capacity/long-range communications for satellite-based services; in addition, airborne tactical data links are used in active radar sensors as they can provide accurate ranging measurements and critical data on a real-time basis.

According to the forecast, the North American tactical data link market is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period, as a result of an increase in terrorist activities as well as increases in the various military equipment modernization programs, such as Army’s Combat Ground Systems, which have spurred major U.S.  defense firms to develop more advanced tactical data links, such as Link 16 and Link 22.
