NASA and French aerospace center to collaborate on supersonic travel, sonic boom research

WASHINGTON. NASA has signed a research agreement with France's Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aerospatiales (ONERA), the French national aerospace research center, to mount a project that could make supersonic passenger flights over land practical and dramatically reduce travel time in the U.S. or anywhere in the world.
Under the agreement, the 12th accord between the two organizations, NASA and ONERA agreed to collaborate on research predicting where sonic booms will be heard as supersonic aircraft fly overhead.
Both organizations, say NASA officials, will define common verification cases, use numerical tools to predict where sonic booms will reach the ground, and do detailed analyses and comparisons of the results. NASA's work under the agreement complements that which the agency is currently doing at its Langley Research Center in Virginia.
