PATUXENT RIVER, Md. Marine Corps pilots have received the first Block C V-22 Osprey aircraft with new radar and electronic warfare features from Bell Boeing a joint undertaking between Bell Helicopter-Textron and Boeing.
The Block C upgrade features a weather radar system for improving navigation a redesigned Environmental Conditioning System. New electronic warfare system features include additional chaff/flare dispensers, which improves the V-22’s ability to defeat air-to-air and ground-to-air threats. The upgrade also added new cabin and cockpit displays.
The V-22 uses tiltrotor technology to provide the vertical performance of a helicopter with the range and speed of a fixed-wing aircraft. Using nacelles and rotors in vertical position, the aircraft can take off, land, and hover just like a helicopter. Once airborne, the nacelles may be rotated to enable the aircraft to become a turboprop airplane capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight.
