New rugged computer system for avionics, C4ISR released by Kontron
NewsMay 25, 2012
ECHING, Germany. Engineers at Kontron released a new multi-mission rugged computer system called ApexVX -- based on 3U OpenVPX technology -- is designed for avionics and military applications such as precision-guided munitions, mobile military vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic warfare, and C4ISR.
The rugged computer system comes with a pre-configured Linux distribution and also can host most Linux-based applications without having to make code changes. It is housed in a ½ ATR style 3U chassis and integrates an OpenVPX backplane that has four payload slots and one switch slot. A sample ApexVX multi-purpose configuration integrates multiple Kontron products -- two conduction-cooled XX3030 SBCs, the PCI Express and Ethernet hybrid switch VX3905, and the VX3830 Virtex5 FMC carrier.
Kontron’s VXFabric brings hardware assisted TCP/IP on PCIe for data flow applications to perform efficient inter-board communication. VXControl uses the onboard controllers interfaced via the standard System Management Bus (SMB) of the VPX backplane for Out of Band Health Management. VXControl has system monitoring and control of critical parameters including temperature, airflow/fans, and power supply. Kontron's PBIT enables system diagnosis including all the peripheral components across the backplane. Its system-wide test solution can check whether a computer configuration matches a pre-recorded reference from early lab trials all the way up to deployed systems. Kontron PBIT identifies and records transient errors.
The ApexVX system can be ordered as a pre-qualified system complies to relevant standards such as MIL-STD810 E for shock, vibration, humidity, salt fog, and MIL-STD461-E for EMC/RFI. The ApexVX also includes Kontron’s long-term supply program and a support hotline. First samples of the ApexVX system are available now.
