CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Raytheon is developing a machine learning technology under a $6 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the Competency Aware Machine Learning program.

According to the company, systems will be able to communicate the abilities they have learned, the conditions under which the abilities were learned, the strategies they recommend, and the situations for which those strategies can be used.

Through a video-game like process, researchers will communicate choices and ultimate goals to the system. By repeatedly playing the game, researchers hope the system will learn the most effective ways to meet the goal.

Recordings of the conditions and strategies used to reach certain outcomes will allow the system to explain itself. Once the skills have been developed, researchers will apply it to simulated missions and allow the system the chance to explain its decisions in specific conditions.
