Intelligent sensor program for DARPA garners Raytheon $8.8 million contract

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. Raytheon won an award worth $8.8 million cost-plus-fixed-fee completion contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for a research project for the agency's Fast Event-based Neuromorphic Camera and Electronics (FENCE) program.
Information on the award announcement details that the FENCE program seeks to develop and demonstrate a low-latency, low-power, event-based camera and a new class of signal-processing and learning algorithms that uses combined spatial and temporal (spatio-temporal) information to enable intelligent sensors for tactical Department of Defense (DoD) applications.
According to information from DARPA, "neuromorphic" refers to a silicon chip built to mimic brain operation that would be able to perform difficult perception and control tasks while at the same time achieving significant energy savings.
Under the terms of the contract, work on the FENCE project will be performed at Raytheon facilities in California, Massachusetts, Texas, Arizona, and New York, with an expected completion date of May 2025.
