AI pact aims to enhance satellite and spacecraft operations

BETHESDA, Md. and TOKYO, Japan. Aerospace and security company Lockheed Martin and IT/networking company NEC Corp. announced that Lockheed Martin will use NEC?s System Invariant Analysis Technology (SIAT) in the space domain.
SIAT’s analytics/artificial intelligence (AI) engine uses data collected from sensors to learn the behavior of systems -- including those used in computers, power plants, factories, and buildings -- which enables the system itself to automatically scan for and detect inconsistencies and offer resolutions to any problems found.
According to Lockheed Martin officials, the agreement marks the beginning of development of enhanced integrated satellite and spacecraft operations with uniquely developed prescriptive analytics, which could include rapid assessments of changes in performance and the space environment, such as the potential influence of space weather on electronics. Armed with such information and assessments, operators would be able to improve product performance and life cycle efficiency.
Carl Marchetto, vice president of New Ventures at Lockheed Martin Space, said of the venture: “AI can revolutionize how we use information from space, both in orbit and on deep space missions, including crewed missions to Mars and beyond.”
