BERLIN, Germany. Airbus Defence and Space and Helsing will collaborate to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technologies aimed at enhancing the teaming of manned and unmanned military aircraft, the companies announced at the ILA aerospace trade show.

This partnership focuses on AI integration into the Wingman system, an unmanned fighter-type aircraft designed to operate alongside existing combat jets.

The collaboration seeks to leverage AI for critical combat operations, enabling the Wingman to perform tasks such as target reconnaissance, electronic jamming, and other high-risk activities autonomously while still under human command from pilots in aircraft like the Eurofighter -- a system tha tis intended to increase operational safety and efficiency by allowing manned aircraft to remain outside of direct combat zones, the statement reads.

Helsing will contribute its AI technologies to the project. This includes sensor data processing, subsystem optimization, and electronic warfare algorithms essential for the Wingman's functionality. Airbus will integrate these AI solutions with its expertise in manned-unmanned teaming dynamics and as the prime contractor of key European defense projects, the statement reads.
