EAST AURORA, N.Y. Instruments made by the Moog Space and Defense Group have been successfully deployed on NASA?s NICER (Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer) mission onboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Pat Stroh, manager of business development for Moog Space Sector, said of the project: “Moog Mountain View provided tuned mass dampers (TMD), Moog Tempe provided the main electronics box (MEB) with GPS and gimbal controller electronics (GCE), and Moog Chatsworth provided the deployment and pointing system (DAPS) for the science payload.” NASA's NICER mission is intended to provide high-precision measurements of neutron stars, which are objects containing ultradense matter at the threshold of collapse into black holes. Additionally, NICER will also run initial tests on technology relying on pulsars as navigation beacons; such a navigation technique may eventually guide human exploration to the distant reaches of the solar system and beyond.
