Lockheed Martin to equip MK 48 torpedoes with guidance and control systems

MARION, Mass. U.S. Navy officials selected Lockheed Martin to provide sonar systems for the MK 48 Mod 7 Torpedo. The contract spans over a five-year period to facilitate an inventory increase of the torpedoes for the submarine fleet.
Under contract, engineers will equip the torpedoes with guidance and control systems, which will increase the bandwidth and streamline its targeting and tracking capabilities. Channel Technology Group (CTG) in Santa Barbara, California, is providing the acoustic array.
Lockheed Martin officials say, there is a potential for production orders to be more than 250 torpedoes over the next five years.
Work will be performed at the Lockheed Martin facility in Marion, Massachusetts, with support from the company’s locations in Manassas, Virginia, Palm Beach, Florida, and Syracuse, New York. The contract’s estimated value is $425 million.
