STEVENAGE, U.K. European missile maker MBDA has signed an agreement with the U.K. ministry of defense to arm U.K. Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon jets with Brimstone missiles, said U.K. defense secretary Gavin Williamson, in a deal worth 400 million pounds ($563 million).
The recently signed Brimstone 2 Capability Sustainment Programme with MBDA UK will also build new equipment to support the Brimstone win and will develop a stockpile of weapons available for operations. The contract will create approximately 130 jobs and sustain hundreds more jobs across the U.K.
The new program will also enable the Brimstone missile to be further developed for use on future aircraft; Brimstone is among weapons being considered for use by the British army’s new AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and the RAF’s next-generation Protector unmanned aerial system.
MBDA is a joint venture of Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo.
