SYRACUSE, New York. Saab has won a $32.24 million contract with the U.S. Navy to implement its MK 9 Tracker Illuminator System Replacement Continuous Wave Tracking Illuminator that is aimed at upgrading the Raytheon MK 57 NATO Seasparrow surface-to-air missile system on board aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships.
According to information from the U.S. Navy, the Seasparrow is a radar-guided, short-range surface-to-air missile that equips ships with self-defense capability against a variety of air and surface threats, including high-speed, low-altitude anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs).
Work on the initial part of the contract will be done at Saab in Syracuse and East Syracuse, New York, and is expected to be completed in August 2023. The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of the contract to $104.8 million and could continue through March 2030.
