SPY-6 radar enhancements coming for U.S. Navy ships

ANDOVER, Massachusetts. Raytheon won a $677 million contract to extend production of the AN/SPY-6(V) radars for the U.S. Navy, an award which represents the third option exercised under a five-year agreement that potentially totals up to $3 billion, the company announced in a statement.
The contract will provide seven additional SPY-6 radars, raising the total to 38 systems commissioned for the Navy. These radars are used for the fleet's air surveillance and electronic warfare protection.
Currently, the SPY-6 radar is being integrated across the Navy's surface fleet, starting with the USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125), which was commissioned in October 2023. The USS Richard M. McCool Jr. (LPD 29), another vessel equipped with this technology, was delivered in April after completing builder's and acceptance trials. This variant of the radar, the SPY-6(V)2, is designed to enhance defense against missile threats as well as support air traffic control operations, the statement reads.
The SPY-6 family is projected to be deployed on 65 U.S. Navy ships over the next decade, the company says.
