Space Fence Radar system contract won by Lockheed Martin

MOORESTOWN, NJ. Lockheed Martin won a $914 million contract from the U.S. Air Force for improving the way objects are tracked in space to increase U.S. capabilities for preventing space-based collisions.
The Space Fence solution from Lockheed Martin is an advanced ground-based radar system that will enable enhanced detection, cataloging and measuring of more than 200,000 orbiting objects. through better timeliness and improved surveillance coverage, the system is expected to protect space assets against potential crashes that may intensify the debris problem in space. The Space Fence radar system also is expected to improve Space Situational Awareness of the existing Space Surveillance Network.
Lockheed Martin engineers will deploy up to two advanced S-Band phased array radars for this program. Construction of the Space Fence system on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands is scheduled to begin early next year to meet the program's 2018 initial operational capability goal. he total contract value is estimated at being greater than $1.5 billion over an eight-year period of performance if all options are exercised.
