WASHINGTON. The U.S. State Department has announced a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Spain of five AEGIS Weapons Systems (AWS) for an estimated cost of $860.4 million.
The addition of five new AEGIS-equipped frigates to Spain's fleet, say State Department officials, will enable Spain to be more flexible and capable of countering possible regional threats and will continue to enhance stability in the region. Spain currently operates five AEGIS-equipped frigates; State Department officials say that its military is proficient at using the AEGIS system to its fullest capability.
The prime contractors connected to this possible FMS of the AWS to Spain will be Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and General Dynamics, along with a significant number of companies under contract with the U.S. Navy that will provide components, systems, and engineering services during the execution of this effort.
