Modularity desired by Embedded World attendees
OtherMarch 01, 2012
Attendees at the 2012 Embedded World show in Nuremberg, Germany are more concerned with modularity than form factor when it comes to their embedded purchases, says Robi Harris, director of sales and customer service at RTD in State College, Pa.
Modular solutions such as PC/104 provide an upgrade path to add capability and enable longevity, which is very important in military embedded systems, Harris says.
Modularity is also very important when it comes to maintaining systems that are deployed for long periods of time. Harris related an example where integrators of a Navy shipboard application saved a lot of money by maintaining spare modules instead of spare systems. If something went wrong they could just pull out one of the modular slices and replace it with another module, instead of ripping out an entire system.
PC/104 is popular with military designers because it is so flexible and modular as well as rugged, Harris says. For more on the RTD modular PC/104 products there is still time to visit them today at Embedded World, Hall 1, Booth 134 or online at www.rtd.com.
