Navy's Aegis weapon system to get upgrade with potential $210 million contract from Raytheon

WALTHAM, Mass. Raytheon has secured a potential five-year, $209.6 million contract to repair, modify, or replace components that support major subsystems of the U.S. Navy?s Aegis Combat System.
Under the terms of the contract, Raytheon will repair, upgrade, or replace 361 items on housed within the Aegis weapons control platform’s AN/SPY-1 radar system transmitter group and MK99 fire-control system, according to reports from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
The Aegis system uses computers and radar to guide weapons to destroy targets, while the MK99 fire-control system directs the loading and arming of the selected weapon, launching it, and providing terminal guidance for missiles.
The DoD expects that approximately 70% of the work will be performed in Chesapeake, Virginia, and 30% done in Marlborough, Massachusetts, with work completed by 2024.
