SOSA UPDATE APRIL 2023

The SOSA Update bimonthly E-newsletter from the editorial staff of militaryembedded.com covers the news, blogs, columns, feature articles, videos, podcasts, and more on the activities of the Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) Consortium, via the Military Embedded Systems collaboration with The Open Group, who manages the consortium, and the SOSA Outreach Committee. The SOSA Consortium enables government and industry to collaboratively develop open standards and best practices to enable, enhance and accelerate the deployment of affordable, capable, interoperable sensor systems.

The uncrewed aerial system (UAS) industry faces constant pressure to reduce the size, weight, and power (SWaP) requirements for the payloads they carry. Those pressures often conflict with the mounting data-gathering and bandwidth demands of these systems. Open standards – along with artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced machine learning (ML) technologies – will be key to development in the military UAS arena.

At the 2018 Embedded Tech Trends conference, results were presented from early simulations that conclusively established 100 Gigabit Ethernet could be successfully implemented on VPX using existing and newly announced copper connectors. At that time, many in the industry thought that optical interconnects and fiber would be required to support 100 GbE speeds.

Today’s modern defense systems exploit massive volumes of data to provide warfighters with more accurate, complete intel. This paper examines the critically important interconnect technology and ecosystem built around Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) standards and specifically, how the emerging PCIe 5.0 protocol benefits a new generation of rugged, deployable application platforms.

Multichannel systems and compares it with measurements on a 16-channel S-band demonstrator. This analytic approach is based on a small set of measurements that can be used to estimate correlated vs. uncorrelated noise contributions. Based on only a few measurements, phase noise under a wide range of conditions can be predicted.
