CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. Engineers at Rockwell Collins have designed a GPS receiver that can plug and play with commercial and military mobile devices -- the Remote Secure Receiver (RSR). Battlefield Airmen Office of the Air Force Special Operations Command officials recently ordered the RSR, which has a small, low=power military Selected Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM) GPS solution.

The increasing use of jamming and spoofing devices, along with the advent of warfighters using a combination of commercial smart phones, tablets, and military devices has created a need for technology that secures these devices. The RSR’s plug and play capability can be configured to meet individual soldier requirements, eliminating the need for a unique military GPS receiver for each system. The RSR offers warfirghters assured PNT information, enabling increased situational awareness.

“The need for trusted position, navigation and timing (PNT) is vital. In fact, the GPS jamming and spoofing threat is growing,” says Mike Jones, vice president and general manager of Communication and Navigation Products for Rockwell Collins. “The impacts of unassured PNT can be deadly. When navigating without a secure military GPS device, in a jamming or spoofed environment, a soldier’s position can be greater than 500 meters off in just five minutes. These deficiencies can seriously limit the ability of soldiers to successfully conduct operations.”
