U.S. Navy ships to equip with portable satcom systems

ARLINGTON, Va. Leonardo DRS, Inc. announced that it has won a contract worth up to $10 million to produce mobile Shipboard Carry-On/Off Satellite Communication Systems (SCOSS) for U.S. Navy ships.
According to information from Leonardo DRS, the SCOSS -- designed and manufactured by the company’s Airborne & Intelligence Systems business unit -- provides a secure network connection from stem to stern on large and small naval vessels while enabling continuous service on wideband satellite networks that can compensate for blocked shipboard network issues. The system is able to be moved off the ship as needed for use on ground vehicles to provide continuous high-bandwidth communication in demanding environments.
Leonardo DRS officials say that the SCOSS can transmit and receive data at rates of up to 6 MB per second using both commercial Ku or X-band frequencies; in addition, the Leonardo DRS X-band variant is certified for operation on the Paradigm, XTAR, and WGS satellite constellations.
The SCOSS is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in 2019.
