Dept. of Homeland Security contracting for biometric ID services

MACLEAN, Va. Northrop Grumman Corp. has won a $95 million contract from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM) to develop the first two increments of the Homeland Advanced Recognition Technology (HART) system. Northrop Grumman's role during the 42-month project will be systems developer and integrator.
HART -- described by DHS as "more robust" than its predecessor -- is the organization’s next-generation recognition program, replacing the Automated Biometric Identity System (IDENT) built in the 1990s. When fully implemented, HART will perform multimodal biometric identification of individuals to enable both national security and public safety as well as the provision of benefits and services.
HART’s scalable architecture will allow for vastly increased transaction volumes, new ways of screening, and mission growth for DHS and OBIM, which supports the Department's responsibility to protect the U.S. by providing biometric identification services that help federal, state, and local government decision-makers accurately identify the people they encounter and determine whether those people pose a risk to the nation.
