U.S. Army to receive Raytheon's foreign language translation software

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. U.S. Army officials selected Raytheon BBN Technologies, a Raytheon Co. subsidiary, to deliver its foreign language translation software. The contract is worth an estimated $4 million.
Under contract, Raytheon will provide automatic speech recognition, machine translation, text-to-speech, and optical character recognition software licenses for one year to the Army's Machine Foreign Language Translation System Program Office.
With the Machine Foreign Language Translation System, U.S. Army personnel can converse with Iraqi Arabic and Pashto speakers and understand foreign language documents and digital media on three platforms:
- Android handheld
- Windows laptop and server-based systems
- Intelligence system used at the battalion level
