U.S. Army places $97 million order for BAE Systems night-vision, thermal-weapon sight tools

ARLINGTON, Va. The U.S. Army has placed two orders with BAE Systems (Nashua, New Hampshire) totaling $97 million for new night-vision goggles and thermal weapon sights; together the tools will enable soldiers to rapidly and covertly acquire targets in all kinds of weather and lighting conditions.
The recent orders are part of a previously announced five-year contract for the Army’s Enhanced Night Vision Goggle III and Family of Weapon Sight-Individual (ENVG III/FWS-I) program.
According to company information, the BAE Systems ENVG III/FWS-I tools feature a Rapid Target Acquisition (RTA) Module that aims to greatly reduce target engagement time and enhance lethality; the RTA solution uses a wireless connection to transmit the weapon sight’s aim point and surrounding imagery directly into the soldier’s goggle. This in-goggle display enables soldiers to quickly locate and engage targets from any carry position, without needing to shoulder the weapon, and can allow the soldier to accurately engage targets while still maintaining full cover.
Work on this recent order will be performed at BAE Systems’ facilities in Lexington, Massachusetts, and Austin, Texas.
